On the occasion of the 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐠𝐞𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲, EPIC partners want to show their solidarity and raise awareness about the immediate need to protect the right to asylum, resettlement and the non-refoulement principle in Europe, especially for refugees living in overcrowded camps during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to UNHRC, there were 79.5 million forcibly displaced people worldwide at the end of 2019 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order. A total of 26 million were refugees, and more than two-thirds of all refugees under UNHCR’s mandate come from just five countries (Syrian, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar).
The World Refugee Day started to be celebrated in 2001, with the objective of honouring the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
