History is more than just a record of the past; it shapes our identities and influences how we understand the present. This makes it an essential tool in helping integrate migrants and refugees. History education offers a vital pathway for allowing migrants to engage with the cultural and historical fabric of their new home while encouraging host communities to embrace the diverse experiences of newcomers.
The History Box is an innovative initiative that offers educational tools designed to enhance integration through historical awareness. This project hosted its Final Conference on 17 October in Brussels, to share its final outcomes and results. EPIC-UP was also presented in this event, organised by KMOP Policy Center.
The History Box project has created:
- 10 micro-learning units designed to help trainers and educators who teach courses for refugees and migrants. These units provide well-researched, relevant, and easy-to-understand information about major historical events or processes.
- Practical guidelines for adult educators and a policy paper on how history education can positively influence the integration process.
History education facilitates integration by:
- Building a sense of shared identity: learning the host country’s history helps migrants connect with their new surroundings by emphasising shared experiences and values, bridging the gap between “us” and “them.”
- Promoting mutual understanding: it helps migrants understand the cultural and historical context of their new country, offering insights into key events, symbols, and traditions.
- Combatting prejudice and stereotypes: engaging with different historical narratives reduces ignorance, breaks down stereotypes, and challenges xenophobic attitudes.
- Empowering migrants through knowledge: understanding history equips migrants to navigate legal, political, and social systems, boosting their confidence and participation in civic life.
